These are all great questions that we will hopefully answer as you keep on reading. First off, it’s important to note that there is no fixed unit of measurement when it comes to out buildings such as sheds and garages. There are multiple variables at play such as height, length and width. To help you make an informed decision, we’ll cover all three variables before providing some common examples for reference.

The first thing to take into account when it comes to finding out building sizes for outdoor structures such as storage sheds and gazebos is height. For example, let’s say that your home faces south and you want to place this new structure somewhere in the back yard so it gets plenty of sunlight throughout the day. Knowing the height of  your said shed or garage will play a massive role here as well since most houses have roof lines between 8-12 feet high. A typical building height would be between 9 and 10 feet so you need to keep this in mind as well.

Building sizes can vary greatly here as well, but as a general rule, we always recommend going as wide as possible if your space allows for it. The wider the building, the more storage capacity you’ll have and that’s what we’re ultimately trying to achieve here: maximizing storage capability while minimizing footprint. For example, let’s say that we’ve got a 40 foot by 10 foot (400 sq ft) area and we’d like to maximize shed capacity within these dimensions. So naturally, our best bet would be a 10×20 shed since this will give us double the amount of storage compared to simply buying a 10×10. Why? Because this larger storage building will have twice as much volume so you’d be doubling your storage capacity right off the bat!
